Membership Spotlight: Mrs. Priscilla Florence

Q: What inspired you to attend Clark Atlanta University (CC, AU, or CAU) and how did your time there shape who you are today?

A: I attended Clark College (CC) because the majority of my high school classmates attended Florida A & M University. I wanted to attend a different college and meet new friends. When I did my research Clark College in Atlanta, GA was next to Florida and not too far from home.

I lived in the dormitory all four years and that experience helped shaped me. I arrived on campus and had to make decisions, be independent and learn how to get along with people. I left with these qualities that have sustained me in my professional career and my personal life.

Q: Can you share a memorable experience or tradition from your time at CAU that still resonates with you?

A: A memorable experience from my time at CAU was when Dr. King, Julian Bond and other leaders were having meetings on the Non-Violent Student Rights Movement in the Atlanta Center. Several of my classmates were the organizers for Clark.

My roommate and other seniors participated in marching at the department stores in downtown Atlanta. I prayed the entire time that my parents would not find out and that I would not to be jailed. My parents were expecting me to graduate on time. I graduated with my senior class.

Q: How has being part of the CAU alumni network; especially in the Carolinas impacted your personal or professional journey?

A: Since graduating, I have maintained my connections with alumni chapters. When I lived in Los Angeles, I was very active, and when I moved to Riverside, CA I was president of the chapter and assisted in the chartering of the chapter.

In 2014,A I moved to SC and became involved in the Charlotte Chapter. Due to my years of involvement, I am extremely proud to have been recognized and honored by the CAU Board of Trustees and National Alumni Association and the Los Angeles and Charlotte chapters.

I know for a fact that being active and connected can be rewarding and impactful for your professional and personal journey.

Q: What advice would you give to current CAU students or recent graduates navigating life after college?

A: The advice I give to CAU graduates is that you have been given the tools to be powerful, talented, valuable, wise and taught how to reach back and pull others along. Use these gifts, stay connected with alumni. They are your family and friends for life.

As I am aging gracefully, my family, my alumni, my friends and my faith in God contributes to my abundant love, joy, peace and contentment in my life.
