Q: What inspired you to attend Clark Atlanta University (CC, AU, or CAU, and how did your time there shape who you are today?
A: I was inspired to attend Clark Atlanta University because I knew early on that I wanted the experience of an HBCU. I just didn’t know which one. Growing up, I spent summers in Atlanta visiting my dad, and we would often ride past Clark Atlanta’s campus. My curiosity led me to research the school, and I was inspired by the many influential leaders and creatives who graduated from CAU. At the time, I aspired to become a broadcaster or sports analyst, and Clark’s Mass Media Arts program stood out as top tier, aligning perfectly with my goals at that time.
My time at CAU shaped me in ways far beyond academics. The university pushed me to tap into my authentic self and truly understand who I am. One humanities class with Dr. Georgianne Thomas, S/o G. Nation, was especially life-changing; it deepened my understanding of my African American roots and history. That experience made me more self-aware, grounded, and proud of my identity lessons I continue to carry with me today.
Q: Can you share a memorable experience or tradition from your time at CAU that still resonates with you?
A: One of my most memorable experiences at Clark Atlanta University was receiving a full-time job offer during my junior year, following a summer internship with Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa. Going into my senior year already knowing I had secured employment was both validating and motivating. At the time, I accepted the offer immediately, not realizing that other opportunities might come later, but I chose to honor my commitment and not renegotiate.
What truly made this experience resonate was the unwavering support from CAU’s Computer Science Department. My professors consistently pushed me, guided me, and ensured I was prepared for real-world opportunities. Their belief in me and dedication to my growth played a major role in my success, and I remain deeply grateful for the foundation and confidence they helped instill in me.
Q: How has being part of the CAU alumni network, especially in the Carolinas, impacted your personal or professional journey?
A: Being part of the Clark Atlanta University Alumni network, especially in the Carolinas, has had a meaningful impact on both my personal and professional journey. Connecting with fellow alumni and witnessing the endless possibilities that come from boldly pursuing one’s dreams is constantly inspiring and motivating. The shared CAU bond creates a sense of community, encouragement, and pride that opens doors and fosters genuine connections.
Professionally, serving in roles that allow me to stay engaged with the alumni network has helped me keep my skills sharp while continuing to learn and adapt to new technologies. These experiences have been both rewarding and empowering, reinforcing the value of lifelong learning and the strength of the CAU community in supporting growth, excellence, and continued success.
Q: What advice would you give to current CAU students or recent graduates navigating life after college?
A: The advice I would give to current CAU students and recent graduates is simple: do it scared. You won't always have a clear roadmap, and that's okay; sometimes you are the blueprint. You may be the first to lead the charge, create impact, or step into unfamiliar territory, and that takes courage.
Do it scared. Do it boldly. Do it loud. Don't let fear or self-doubt hold you back. Trust that every step forward, even uncertain ones, is building something meaningful. With discipline, endurance, and belief in yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Keep pushing, stay authentic, and remember that growth often happens on the other side of fear.
